Overview – Kilimanjaro Climb Via Marangu

Kilimanjaro Budget Climbs | 5 Days Marangu Route

The uniqueness of this route compared to others is the accommodation facilities, that; it offers shared Mountain huts, with beds and mattresses, solar power energy and piped taped water.  The short falls on this route is acclimatization problem; this may result into altitude sickness, which caused by insufficient oxygen as altitude increases.

Attraction: Mountain rain forest with different species of monkeys and other small animals, Kilimanjaro vegetation zones, Maundi crater, Kilimanjaro sceneries, and its panoramic view.

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll meet our office representative, followed by an hour drive to the hotel in Moshi Town. After having a short rest at the hotel, our mountain guide will meet you to check with your climbing gear and equipment. If some gears will be missing, our guide will help you on how to rent those missing gears from the rental shops.

DAY 01: From Hotel to Marangu gate-Mandara Hut.

It takes not more than one hour to reach Marangu gate, passing through the villages located on the lower slopes of the Mountain. At the gate you will have to register all the important details like names, Nationality, and passport number. While the registration process is taking place, porters will be sorting and weighing the luggage. You will have spare time to move around taking photos and reading the historical information of Kilimanjaro Mountain.

After all process is completed, you will slowly start hiking, passing through the rain forest to the first point, Mandara Hut, where you will spend the rest of the day, for dinner and overnight.

DAY 02: From Mandara hut to Horombo hut.

After breakfast at Mandara Hut, you will start hiking to Horombo hut, 11km from Mandara, and it may take up to 7 hours. The trail passes through the short stretch of forest to the base of Maundi crater, and you will have a time to take a short tour to the rim of the crater. Once you reach at Horombo hut, you will have a rest, dinner, and overnight.

DAY 03: From Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut. (Summit overnight)

Hike to Kibo hut, passing through the alpine desert habitat. Distance from Horombo to Kibo is 9.6km and the approximated time is up to 6 hours. At Kibo hut you will have a hot lunch, rest, and early dinner because you are supposed to bed as early as possible.

Summit night attempt

You will wake up around 01:00am, preparing yourself with the summit gears; remember to have enough warm clothing and gears that will accommodate up to -10 Celsius.  Guides will lead you slowly to hike up, passing through Hans Meyer cave to Gilman’s point (5681m), before finishing at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Congratulation! You have made it to the top of Africa; you are now standing at the Africa’s highest point ‘Uhuru Peak’.

DAY 04: From summit to Kibo hut-Horombo hut.

The dawning of the fourth day might still catch you at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, if it’s not so much cold, you will have enough time to take photos of your lifetime adventure in Tanzania. After all is done at the top, you will slowly descend to Kibo hut, where you will have a short rest and breakfast, then descending to Horombo hut where you will have rest, lunch, dinner, and overnight.

DAY 05: From Horombo hut to Marangu gate.

After breakfast, you will hike down using the same trail as when you ascended. Distance now is 19km, because you will skip Mandara hut point, it will take up to 7 hours. At Marangu gate you will to sign out, receiving certificates, followed by an hour-private drive to the hotel in Moshi.

50L waterproof duffle, small-size backpack, warm clothes including trouser, sweater, thermal underwear, and enough pair of warm socks, Balaclava, snow goggles, or ski sun glasses and scarf, waterproof layers, sun roof hat, warm sleeping bag, mattress, warm jacket, and a pair of gloves. Comfort mountain boots, and walking poles, Sun cream, first aid kit, a knapsack, a pair of getters and water-bottle, minimum 2litres each.

Mount Kilimanjaro climb: Tips for safe and successful Kilimanjaro summit.

-Choose the best route that offers good acclimatization, oxygen decreases as you climb to higher elevation, choose the routes that offer the acclimatization throughout to avoid the possibility of experiencing higher altitude mountain sickness. In this case Rongai, Lemosho, and Machame routes are highly recommended.

-Be well prepared and full equipped for Kilimanjaro trekking, do not forget to carry all necessary trekking equipments and gears. Remember, weather in the mountain is not precisely predictable; having with you the all weather gears is the best decision.

-Do not carry too much heavy day-pack. Most of your item luggage will be carried by Kilimanjaro porters; you will just carry your light day pack bag, which contains the most necessary personal use for a day only.

-Listen carefully to your guide, do not ignore the little advice from your guide, our Kilimanjaro guides are having more than 10-years experience, they have a broad working knowledge of Mount Kilimanjaro, please listen to what they direct you to do.

-Eat enough food and drink more water so that your body won’t run out of energy, long day working requires body energy, make sure you eat as much as you can. Do not forget to go to bed early so that you will wake up with new energy to continue climbing.

Best time of the year to go for Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing:

  • June to October-peak of high season, most of the Kilimanjaro routes and hotels are crowded.
  • October to December-Most of the Kilimanjaro routes are less crowded, this season may be associated with seasonal rainfall so not that much good for climbing.

December to end of February-High season most of the routes and hotels are crowded.

  • March to early of June-Low season, it’s the peak of the wet season as these months are associated with heavy rainfalls so not ideal for climbing.
